This is a question that we get asked about a lot, so we thought we should make a quick post about this.
So what are the main differences between custom made and standard size sliding doors?
The main difference is that all Standard Size Sliding Doors (excluding loft doors) are designed to suit an opening height of 2260 mm. This cannot be changed as these doors are made from precise templates and all require this height. Note: This is not the actual height of the doors, but the height of the opening they’ll be installed into, so your space needs to be accurate for this.
As standard doors have been so popular for many years, we often find that customers already have wardrobes that are the perfect size to suit our standard doors. In this case, you can simply choose a new design that’s more on trend for a straightforward replacement.
If, however, you do not already have the 2260 mm standard opening height, you can usually adapt your opening to suit – although, we always recommend customers think carefully about this first, as Custom Made Sliding Doors may prove to be the better option. Although custom made doors seem dearer than standard doors, consider the work you have to do to adjust your wardrobe to suit standard size. Also remember that if you are reducing your height to suit standard doors, you are in effect restricting your potential wardrobe space. So it’s worth keeping in mind that we make custom sliding doors right up to a height of 2480 mm, and that may enable you to use every little bit of your available space.
Can I Customise Standard Size Sliding Doors?
Our Standard Sliding Doors are very competitively priced because we work to set sizes, designs and panel choices so production is highly efficient, therefore customisation outwith those existing choices is not possible. Instead, if you’d really like to be able to select from additional finishes, (such as Pure White Glass or one of our other exclusive colours) then custom made may be the better choice for you. Many of our customers choose to do that.
Why are Standard Size Sliding Doors Cheaper?
Our streamlined production of Standard Size Sliding Doors utilises batch-processing of our steel and glass components. This enables us to maintain high volumes at the highest quality for the lowest cost to the customer.
With custom doors we simply ask for your opening width, opening height and door design. We then take all of that onboard and do all of the various calculations to make your doors look beautiful. Not only are there a lot of calculations to be done, but there is very precise manual cutting involved. No robots make our sliding doors. Just a skilled team fuelled by lovely coffee. For this reason, custom doors are more expensive as they are 100% bespoke to your home and your room.
Can I get Soft Close on Standard Size Sliding Doors?
Unfortunately not, because our Standard Size Doors use a different tracking system which is incompatible with the soft close systems.
Soft close pistons are included on all Custom Made Sliding Doors that are wider than 650mm. If you are unsure of your door width, call us on 01698 209888 and one of our team will quickly work that out for you. We will also need to know what door frame you like as everyone is different and the calculations all differ due to this.
Can I Talk To Somebody about Custom Sliding Doors
Absolutely. We operate in a very different way to other retailers. Many simply resell doors and never physically handle the goods. We make them in our own factory and have the blisters on our hands to prove it! We have been hand making sliding doors since 1980.
This hands-on experience is continued with our customer service team. We want to talk to you about your design and the space you have so you can make the most of it. It can all be done via email or we can talk it all through over the phone.
There are no real limits to the design we can achieve for you so get in touch and let’s get your amazing new wardrobe started.
