5 Little Changes that’ll make a Big Difference With Your Bedroom Storage

If you are reading this then you are probably on the hunt for some magical way of creating more storage space in your bedroom, or elsewhere in your house. As house prices rise and room sizes shrink the more we have to adapt! Luckily, Bedrooms Plus have been building fitted wardrobe and storage solutions since 1980, so we have some practical tips to share with you in your quest to make the most of your valuable space.

1: Use shelves more than hanging

Yes, it would be lovely to open up our wardrobe and see a massive expanse of space with clothing all organised by type and colour, and if you have that space available, fantastic. However, in most cases this is a fantasy, so what can you do instead? By installing Tower Shelving Units to subdivide your space, you can create huge amounts of usable clothing storage space that may otherwise have gone to waste. For example, on tower shelving units, you can have T-shirts folded and neatly stacked at the back and the front of one shelf. (Imagine how much space that would have swallowed up on a hanging rail.) Instead, aim to keep the hanging rail space for coats, suits, jackets, and dresses etc.

2: Opt for Sliding Wardrobe Doors

Let’s imagine your wardrobe is at the side of your bed. You step out of bed and slide open your wardrobe to get your clothes. That was easy.

Now let’s imagine you have a hinged wardrobe next to your bed, in a relatively small bedroom. You are going to need at least half a metre of space for the door to swing open. That’s a lot of space in your room wasted simply because you have to open the door!

In comparison, a set of sliding wardrobe doors will only require around 9 cm of space in which to operate! To put that in perspective, that’s about the width of your hand. Space saving at its best.

3: Avoid the flat pack false economy trap

Ok, let’s now consider “flat pack” freestanding wardrobes. By flat pack we mean the kind that come in boxes and you assemble the components yourself. Although it’s a great concept that revolutionised home furniture, flat pack has its disadvantages, especially when your space is limited and every centimetre counts.

Freestanding wardrobes tend to be rather inefficient in how they dominate your available space. Mass production in standard sizes and self-assembly means that the cost-saving could be tempting, but this comes at the expense of your most valuable asset – your space. You’re left with the predicament of having to fit your needs to the wardrobe rather than the wardrobe to your needs.

In comparison, weigh-up the significant benefits of choosing a custom built wardrobe solution. It’s designed to fit your available space and can be configured with tower units, rails and shelving to suit what you need to store in it. Maybe your preferred wardrobe location is not an alcove but a bare wall, and let’s say you can use up 1850mm of that space for your new wardrobe. You’ll soon find that standard size freestanding units are made to 1200 mm, 1500 mm and 2000 mm widths, so one way or another you’re still left with lots of unused lost space. Again, the ideal solution is to choose custom built wardrobes instead.

4: Use all the space you have right up to the ceiling

This is another reason to avoid flat pack freestanding units. They will all have a set height and you will almost always have an empty space above the wardrobe. Again this becomes a dust trap. With custom built, however, you can make good use of your full height with an extra shelf along the top and store things such as spare bedding up there away from the dust.

All those unused areas can soon add up to a lot of wasted space that you can make the most of, and custom built wardrobes enable you to do just that. 5: Use the space under long hanging sections wisely

Long hanging space is usually a narrower section of the wardrobe where you keep dresses and coats. But if you look at the bottom of these areas, there is often a good chunk of space left below that is unused.

This is perfect for providing your shoes with a new home! Sometimes you can even divide this space with shelving to accommodate several pairs.

Just keep in mind that if you opt for a shelving unit with drawers, only put this in the centre if you have a 3 or 4-door system. Your drawers won’t open if this unit is right in the middle of a 2-door wardrobe!
